Green building is a general term used to describe methods of designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, demolishing and remodeling buildings using practices which minimize impact on the air, oceans and land which together form the global environment. Buildings account for almost 40% of the energy consumed in the United States. This is a greater share than any other sector of the economy, including industry (32%) and transportation (28%). Buildings are also responsible for approximately 30% of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions. By better understanding the ways in which energy is wasted in buildings we can take steps to make them more energy-efficient, which in turn will help reduce the growth in energy demand, possibly help slow the growth rate of global warming and move us toward developing a sustainable healthy economy and environment.
